Question by Matthew M: What would be a better first car: a 1993 Volvo 240 or a 1980 Mercedes 300 TD station wagon?
I am 18 and just about to get my first car. I narrowed it down to two cars: a 1993 Volvo 240 and a 1980 Mercedes 300 TD. Both cars are in pretty much mint condition. The Volvo has 97,592 miles on it and the Merc only has 29,145 miles, which is pretty unusual because these car usually go up to 200k miles or more. Anyway, I want to know which car would be a better choice to get.

I'd shop around more and not just be stuck on those. Choose a safe reliable car.

I TOOK MY CAR TO GET WASHEEDDD! (I can't even remember the last time it was washed. A year ago? Longer?) LOOK AT THE RIMS! THEY ARE SO SHINY!

For , I got the "Ultimate Wash." They cleaned the interior, washed the tires and rims, used some kind of foam wash, applied some protectant thing... LOTS OF STUFF! FOR TWENTY BUCKS! I thought it was pretty good.

This is a photo I found this afternoon of the car we had when we lived in California. You can just see the roof panels which lifted out and could be stored in a special bit in the boot ("trunk"). The whole rear hatch could come off too which made it look like a beach buggy. The silver thing behind the windscreen is to stop the interior of the car melting. We were almost certainly the only people to ever use it as a 4-seater - the rear seats were just big enough for our (then) small children.

We all know about the Outback Wagon, common in these parts of the US, but the Outback Sedan is more of an unknown commodity. The particular model you see here was offered from 05-07, but Subaru didn't sell too many of them, actually making them quite rare. Subaru dropped both the Outback Sedan and the regular Legacy Wagon for 2008, and even with the redesigned 2010 models coming out it is unlikely we in the States will ever see these variants again.
